Brakpan

Brakpan was founded in 1886 on the farm Weltevreden and proclaimed a town in 1912. It became a municipality in 1919. It was named after a pan of brackish water.

    Town Hall, Park St, Kingsway ave – The cornerstone was laid on 17 September 1923. The side entrance was dated 1925. Within the premises is the War Memorial

    Fire Station, cnr Park & Wenden. This is an Art deco building dated 1937.

    Methodist Church, 43 Park cnr Wenden- The cornerstone was laid by the Hon. Jan H. Hofmeyr, minister of Mines, Education, Labour and Social Welfare on 28 July 1937.

Nederduits Hervormde Church



    Nederduits Hervormde  Church, cnr Park & Wenden – The cornerstone was laid by Rev JJ Prinsloo on 30 March 1946.

    Dutch Reformed Church, Victoria Ave – The cornerstone was laid on 5 December 1931

    Synagogue, Victoria Ave – the cornerstone was laid by Sam Kruger on 30 August 1931.This now house a museum commemorating the Jewish presence on the East Rand.
