WATERVAL BOVEN
The town developed from a railway supply depot established on the farm Doornhoek in 1895. The name derived from the Elands River Falls, meaning above the falls.

NZASM Tunnel

NZASM Tunnel – The NZASM built a railway line which connect Delagoa Bay with the ZAR. No convenient way was found up the steep escarpment. On recommendation of Maj. J Machado the line was built up the slopes of Elandsberg. To reduce the gradient, this tunnel was cut. Built by E. Warren and Royce it was bored from both ends which met on 9 September 1893. Rack railway was built operated by special trains. The tunnel and rack railway were used until 1908.

NZASM Headquarters building – this building housed the seat of the headquarters of the NZASM Eastern Line. Designed by Meischke and built in 1895. The cornerstone was laid on 5 January 1895.
