Modderfontein

Modderfontein was laid out by Edouard Lippert in 1896. It is famous for its dynamite factory, the largest in the world. The Modderfontein Factory was officially opened by President Paul Kruger.

Franz Hoenig House,

  • Franz Hoenig House, 1 Main St – This house was built for the factory manager in 1896 by German masons and carpenters. Franz Hoenig was the first manager.

The Dynamite Company Museum

  • The Dynamite Company Museum, 2 Main St – This house was built circa 1895 as a staff house. This was the house for the chief engineer.

The Laboratory

  • The Laboratory, Business Park, High St – This building was built in 1898 for the experimental recovery of gold from iron pyrites.

  • The Weather Station, Business Park, High St – Erected in 1896 – it has been moved and rebuilt next to the Laboratory.

Old Fort

  • Old Fort – This fort was erected at the time of the British occupation during the 2nd Anglo Boer War. The fort had since disappeared and only  a section where the flagpole apparently stand remain.

Old Casino circa 1896

  • Old Casino circa 1896. A lot of extensions were done over the years. This was used as the recreation centre for the factory management and their families.
