Wakkerstroom

Wakkerstroom was laid out on the farm Gryshoek in 1859. Originally known as Marthinus-Wesselstroom.

Paul Kruger Bridge

  • Paul Kruger Bridge – just off Kort st next to main rd to Amersfoort – This bridge was erected by A Klute in 1893. The first Zionists in South Africa was baptised here. This was one of the last steel bridges built by the ZAR. This bridge was declared a Historical Monument.

Nederduits Hervormde Church

  • Nederduits Hervormde Church, cnr Kerk and Badenhorst st -The cornerstone was laid by Commandant PJ Joubert (Commander General of the ZAR) on 27 October 1888. On the site is a memorial to the members of the Wakkerstroom Commando killed during the Anglo Boer War. It later changed to the NG Church,

Masonic Lodge

St Mark’s Church

  • – This Anglican church was built in 1880 and consecrated on 6 April 1890 by the Bishop of Pretoria, Right Reverend HB Bousfield. This building was declared a National Monument in 1982.

  • Masonic Lodge, Van Riebeeck st – The cornerstone of the Freemason’s lodge was laid in 1904. This was the first lodge built in Transvaal.

Town Hall

  • Town Hall, Van Riebeeck St - This building was erected in 1938

Court House

  • Court House, Engelbrecht St – This was built in 1897. It was built of sandstone quarried in the area. No cornerstone was laid. This building was declared a Historical Monument.

Old steam locomotive

  • Old steam locomotive, in front of the town hall, Van Riebeeck st – This is a Class 19D locomotive. SAR no 2690. It was built in 1938 by Borsig.

Barry attorney’s offices

  • Barry attorney’s offices, cnr Hoog and Engelbrecht st. The Barrys used this building for more than 60 years

Town Library

  • Town Library, Van Riebeeck st – This library originally functioned as the council chamber and municipal offices from 1903 to 1968.

St Joseph’s Catholic Church

  • St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Badenhorst st – Originally built as a Union Church in 1904. The cornerstone was laid by Swart Dirk Uys, the founder of the town.

Old Bioscope

  • Old Bioscope, van Riebeeck st – Built in 1929 this corrugated hall used to be a bioscope

Wakkerstroom Country Inn

  • Wakkerstroom Country Inn, Badenhorst st – The Wakkerstroom Hotel was originally built 1n 1890, Destroyed in the ABW and rebuilt.

Bank Building

  • Bank Building, cnr Kerk and Badenhorst st – This was the National Bank of South Africa”. The building dated circa 1920.

Marthinus Wessel School

  • Marthinus Wessel School – This school was built in 1897. Currently it houses the Uthaka Secondary School.

Greenacres Manor

  • Greenacres Manor, Kerk st – This was erected in 1895 as a single-storey building. Served as a department store. It was extended to a double storey with a home attached in 1906.

Cemetery

  • Cemetery, cnr Church and Scheiding st – Swart Dirk Uys, the founder of Wakkerstroom lied buried here. Within is a memorial to the British soldiers killed in Wakkerstroom during the 1st Anglo Boer War 1n 1880-1881 as well as a memorial for those killed during the 2nd ABW 0f 1899-1902.
