FREDERIKSTAD

A hamlet also previously a Railway station on the R 501 between Carletonville and Potchefstroom. It was established in 1885 and named after Frederik Wolmarans. (see Voortrekker graves)

Railway water tower 

  • Railway water tower – This was the era of the steam train. The railway line was moved further away during latter years.

Stone house

  • Stone house – this little building presumably was built during the establishment circa 1885.

Railway  houses and hotel

  • The one building at the time was the hotel used by the British during the ABW. The houses were accommodation for the railways

Battle of Frederikstad

  • Battle of Frederikstad – opp railway houses - this monument commemorates 40 burghers who fell during the ABW in this battle on 20 to 25 October 1900. The battle was led by General Liebenberg accompanied by Genl CR de Wet and Mayor-General Barton. On the British side 21 soldiers were killed. The grave of Frederik Gerhardus Breytenbach who was killed on 25 October 1900, is next to the monument.

Voortrekker Graves

  • Voortrekker Graves – on D335 rd., 3,6 km from R 501 rd past the hamlet on right under a tree – Not clearly visible – This pyramid commemorates the resting place of the men and their wives – Frederik Gerhardus Andreas Wolmarans (Frederik Stompoor) 1884, CM Eloff 1844, AE Steyn 1870 and MP Botha 1898.
