Krugersdorp

Krugersdorp was laid out on the farm Paardekraal as public gold-diggings in 1887. It became a municipality in 1903. It was named in honour after President Paul Kruger of the ZAR

Jameson Raid Monument

  • Jameson Raid Monument, R 558 main road (behind Built-It) Doornkop, Soweto – Situated on the farm Vlakfontein. This monument was erected to commemorate the surrender of Dr LS Jameson to the Boer forces on 2nd January 1896. The Uitlanders were to start a revolt on the gold mines of Johannesburg. Cecil John Rhodes would then send an armed force under Jameson from beyond the borders to overthrow the government of the ZAR. The Boers got together to stop Jameson. Fierce fighting broke out and Jameson lost a lot of men. He eventually had to surrender.

Stump Memorial Jameson Raid 

  • Stump Memorial Jameson Raid  – site of Velantic Building (next to Built-It) R558 Main Rd – on farm Vlakfontein - This is the spot where the cottage stood where Jameson surrendered to the Boer forces after the Jameson Raid (previously marked by a cut off tree stump). Jameson surrendered on 2 January 1896.

Railway Station

  • Railway Station, completed in 1896- built for the NZASM by MSA Meiscke. This building was proclaimed a National Monument in 1983

Old Police Station

  • Old Police Station, Commissioner St – This building was erected in 1897. It still forms part of the Krugersdorp police Station.

Blockhouse

  • Blockhouse – cnr Potgieter and Sarel Oosthuizen Str Monument – This blockhouse – Fort Harleigh - was erected by the British occupying forces during the Anglo Boer War 1899-1902. It was built as a defence counter.

  • This Nederduits Hervormde Kerk, President St was desighned by Gerhard Moerdijk - 1935

Town Hall

  • Town Hall, Commissioner St – The foundation stone was laid in 1907 by the Earl of Selbourne. It was opened by Genl Smuts in 1908

Krugersdorp Club

  • Krugersdorp Club, 66 Ockerse St – This club was established in 1897. Doctors Steward and Van der Merwe had a daily drink together under a tree. As the town’s population grew, they founded the Gentleman’s club. At a time, Paul Kruger made use of the boardroom.

Tree opp Krugersdorp Club

  • Tree opp Krugersdorp Club, Ockerse st – During the 1890’s Doctors Steward and Van der Merwe used to close their practice every day at noon and made their way to a tall tree to lounge in the shade to have their daily drink. They founded the Krugersdorp Gentleman’s club

Old Magistrate Courts

  • Old Magistrate Courts, opposite City Hall, Commissioner St – This building was designed by Zytske Wierda. The cornerstone was unveiled by Pres Paul Kruger on 18 September 1890. It was used as a magistrate court until 1973. Currently used as a museum.

Post and Telegraph Building

  • Post and Telegraph Building, 57 Commissioner st – This building dates from 1914.

Paardekraal Monument

  • Paardekraal Monument – On this site a meeting was called 2 days before the first Boer war. On 14 December 1880 about 4000 people marked the occasion by building a stone cairn. The owner of the farm was MPW Pretorius donated it to the government. A monument designed by Sytze Wierda, was built over the cairn and completed on 27 November 1890. It was inaugurated by Pres Paul Kruger on 16 December 1891. In 1900 during the 2nd Boer War the British removed the stones and dumped it into the Vaal River near Vereeniging. The monument was declared a National monument on 6 April 1936.

JG Strijdom Bust

  • JG Strijdom Bust – opp Paul Kruger statue, Begin St – Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom was Prime minister of South Africa 1954-1958. Advocate J. G. Strijdom revived the republican ideal in South Africa around 1930 and with that he joined the republican form of government that Pres Kruger and his citizens restored in honour at Paardekraal in 1880. Contractor: Mr J.M. van Tonder, Sculptor: Mr J.H. Labuscagne

War memorial

  • War memorial – Cnr Luipaard and Von Brandis Str – This cenotaph commemorates those from Krugersdorp who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918. The monument was unveiled in 1922 by Sir Abe Bailey

Paul Kruger Statue

  • Paul Kruger Statue – Cnr Paardekraal Rd and Begin St (opp Paardekraal Monument) – The cornerstone was laid by Jan de Klerk on 10 December 1961. This statue was unveiled by President CR Swart on 10 October 1962. Krugersdorp was named after President Paul Kruger.

Concentration camp Graves

  • Burgershoop Cemetery - In this cemetery are the graves of the women and children who died in then Krugersdorp concentration camp during the Boer War 1899-1902. An obelisk was unveiled by Mrs S Frost on 15 December 1926.

  • Burgershoop Cemetery – Omega st (opp Dept of Correctional Services) – The main entrance to the cemetery with guard house and office for the caretaker was erected in 1912. 

British memorial Anglo Boer War

  • Burgershoop Cemetery -  A monument wa erected in memory of the Imperial Light Horse who fell at Naupoort Nek on 5 January 1901.  A monument was erected in remembrance of the British soldiers who died during the Boer war – 1899-1902. They were originally buried at Nooitgedacht, Cyferfontein, Quggafontein and Vlakfontein and reinterred here.

Boer Graves Jameson Raid

  • Boer Graves Jameson Raid – Burgershoop Cemetery – Five Boers lost their lives during the Jameson Raid during t 29 December 1895 -2 January 1896.and were buried here. They were George Jacobs, Donald Macdonald, Andries Hendrik Potgieter, Sarel Petrus Frederik van Tonder and Petrus Frans Jacobus Venter. This monument was erected in 1917.
