Bloed Rivier

Blood river is a tributary of the Tugela River First joining the Buffalo River and then entering the Tugela River. Known to the Zulu as Ncome (the pleasant one). Refer to the famous battle when the water was coloured with the blood of the fallen. The Battle of Blood River took place on 16 December 1838 between 16000 Zulus and 464 Voortrekkers. About 3000 Zulus fell and 4 Voortrekkers were wounded. The site was proclaimed a National Monument in 1967.

  • Die Gelofte/ The Vow

  • Die Gelofte/ The Vow – A solemn Vow was taken that if God granted them (the Voortrekkers) victory they would build a House to the glory of His name and that they and their descendants would celebrate the day of the victory in honour of God. The Vow was delivered on 9 December 1838 and repeated every evening until the 15th.

  •                The Wagon laager (Walaer)

This wagon laager consist of 64 bronze wagons and two cannons, one named Grietjie, constructed id 1971.This represent the laager at the time of the battle. It was situated between Blood River (Ncome) and a deep donga.

  • The Kakebeen-Wagon Monument

  • Kakabeen Wa -Jaw bone wagon - monument at the site of Blood River. The sculptor was Coert Steynberg. The cornerstone of the monument was laid on 16 December 1938.

  • The Ncome museum was build to commemorate the Zulus who fall during theBattle of Blood river.
