Luneburg was established in 1870 by the Hermannsburg Mission Society. It was named after the Luneburg in Germany.

Fort Clery

Fort Clery – on the church premises – this was built to defend the inhabitants of the hamlet against the Zulus during the Anglo-Zulu war. The Luneburg laager was built around the church. This earthwork fort was built during November 1878. It was named after Major CF Clery. Only the earthworks remained.

Monument, road between Luneburg and Braunschweig – this memorial commemorates the young men Heinrich Filter and Larsen who died in a skirmish with Zulu warriors in 1879.
