Utrecht

This piece of land was bartered from Mpande, a Zulu chief. It was laid out in 1855 on the farm Schoonstroom. For a while it had its own government known as the Republic of Utrecht. It was incorporated into the ZAR in1860, until the ABW when it formed part of Natal. It was proclaimed a town in 1904 and became a municipality in 1920. It was named in 1856 after Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands.

Dutch Reformed Church 

  • Dutch Reformed Church – Church St – The cornerstone was laid on 23 October 1891 by Commandant General Pie Joubert of the ZAR. The inauguration followed on 21 April 1893. The induction service was conducted by Rev Dr Andrew Murray.

Old Dutch Reformed Church Parsonage

  • Old Dutch Reformed Church Parsonage – Church St – This house was taken in use on 12 October 1888. The front gable dates 1887. It is the oldest parsonage in KwaZulu-Natal. It was declared a National Monument.

Burgher Monument

  • Burgher monument in front of Church. This monument commemorates the burghers who fell during the 2nd Anglo Boer War 1899 - 1902.

Magistrate’s Court

  • Magistrate’s Court – 57 Voor St – This building was erected between 1894 and 1899 by the government of the ZAR.

•Pieter Lafras Uys Monument

  • Pieter Lafras Uys Monument – Church St – an early settler and landdrost of the district. Brother of Dirkie Uys. He fought with the British in the Anglo-Zulu War (1879). He was killed at Hlobane on 28 March 1879 while going to the aid of his eldest son. This monument was erected in 1883.

Town Hall

  • Town Hall – 44 Voor St – This building dates to 1913. The cornerstone was laid by JP Sanders, Mayor of Pietermaritzburg and President of the Natal Municipality Association in January 1913. The architect was H. Hellberg.

Old Gaol

  • This jail was built Circa 1893

Military Cemetery

  • This cemetery dates from 1877. Graves of the British who fell during the Anglo Zulu war of 1879 as well as those who fell during the Anglo Boer wa 1899-1902  were interred here..
