Klerksdorp
Named after the first landdrost, Jacob de Clercq (de Klerk), (1791-1888). Already settled by 1837 and named by 1853. It developed rapidly aftewr the discovery of gold in 1886. Became a municipality in 1903.
Klerksdorp Stock Exchange wrought iron gates

Klerksdorp Stock Exchange wrought iron gates – These gates were in front of the stock exchange since 1889. The building was demolished, and the gates were installed in front of the museum, the old prison.
Old Gaol

Old Gaol - Built in 1891 – the building was designed by Sytze Wierda, the architect for the ZAR. It was used as a prison until May 1973. It now serves as a museum to Klerksdorp.
Warders House

Warders House – next to the gaol – built between 1902 and 1910. Thirst served as single quarters for the prison warders. It became the home of the Chief Prison Warder after rooms had been added about 1924.
Powder Magazine

Powder Magazine – erected during the 19th century by the ZAR. Originally situated next to the Klerksdorp – Orkney road. When it was planned to widen the road, the building was transferred to the museum site by numbering the stones and rebuilt in 1977-78.
Railway Station

Railway Station, Delver st – built in 1897 by the NZASM on the Southwestern line. The site included the old flag, Room. The contractor was A. van der Ruit. It was declared a national Monument on 8 April 1983.
Flag Room

Flag Room – at the railway station – originally on the platform and re-erected soon thereafter at the current place. The original plans indicated that it was a men’s toilet. Declared with the station building as a National Monument in 1983.
Locomotive

Locomotive – at the railway station platform – a class 7 locomotive no 980 manufactured in 1892 in Scotland.
Nederduits Gereformeerde Mother Church

Nederduits Gereformeerde Mother Church, Anderson St Cnr Pretorius St– The cornerstone was laid by Commandant General PJ Joubert on 12 March 1898. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site
Wood & Iron Houses

Wood & Iron Houses – 13 and 15 Convent Avenue – circa 1880-85 – The panels were imported from Britain and erected on site. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site
House Fountain Villa

House Fountain Villa, 21 Hendrik Potgieter St – This house was built just after the 2nd ABW. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site
Old Parsonage

Old parsonage to the Dutch Reformed Church – Hendrik Potgieter St – circa 1920. Also known as the Ds Theron parsonage. He became the preacher for the DR Church in 1917.
Church hall

Church hall, Innes St – dated 1882 – used by the Reformed Church as a church hall, the oldest in Klerksdorp.
Old Cemetery

Old Cemetery, Margaretha Prinsloo Rd – The old cemetery includes graves to Voortrekkers and of Jacob de Clercq. British Garden of Remembrance contains graves of British soldiers. Graves of Joiners, the Boers who walk over to the British and fusillided by the Boers after they were caught. A monument designed by Gerhard Moerdyk for the women and children who died in the concentration camp. A section for the Blacks who died in a concentration camp. Al l these casualties were during the 2nd ABW.

Railway culvert - old Klerksdorp -Stilfontein Rd - The culvert was built circa 1897 on the old railway line
