Mbombela district/ Nelspruit

Nelspruit was laid out on the farm Cascades, proclaimed in 1905, administered by a health committee from 1912. It became a municipality in 1940. Named in 1891 after three Nel brothers who grazed their herds there every winter, Andries, Gert and Lewies (Louis Nel)

Elandshoek Railway Station

  • Elandshoek Railway Station -just off the N4 unrouted to Mbombela (Nelspruit) – the NZASM railway line was constructed in 1894. The original station building was a wood and iron building. It deteriorated and was replaced by this sandstone structure in 1897. It contained an office, waiting-room, storeroom and station-master accommodation. The building was declared a National monument on 20 October 1989. Currently neglected and over-grown.

Ngodwana Lime Kilns

  • Ngodwana Lime Kilns – off N4 near Ngodwana Sappi Mills – These kilns were erected circa 1890 to slake the pure limestone derived from the nearby mine. It supplied the whole Barberton district with lime. It was used to reclaim the gold. It was used until 1899 when the processed was changed using cyanide. These structures were declared a National Monument on 30 May 1980.

Alkmaar Railway Station

  • Alkmaar Railway Station – Built during the NZASM period on the Eastern line – erected in 1898 - The structure covered by  a corrugated iron roof with a smaller roof on top of it to admit fresh air into the interior.
