Clarens

Clarens was laid out in 1912. It was named after Clarens in Switzerland where President Paul Kruger died in exile.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

  • Golden Gate Highlands National Park - the name is derived from the sandstone bluffs which look golden at sunset. The park was proclaimed in September 1963.

Golden Gate Family Cemetery

  • Golden Gate Family Cemetery – This is the Van Reenen family cemetery. John van Reenen, the famous discus and shotput athlete is also buried here.

Stone  post

  • Stone post –Sias Odendaal St -  These posts were used as a Mile post on the roads. Also used to mark the borders of farms

Lesotho Highlands water project

  • Lesotho Highlands Water Project – It commemorates the construction of delivery tunnels on the North Lesotho Highlands water project 1991-1996. The network of tunnels divert water from the mountains of Lesotho to South Africa.

Naauwpoort Monument

  • Naauwpoort Monument - Town Square – this monument commemorates the battle of Naauwpoort on 29 Sept 1865. A narrow kloof now on the R711 through the Rooiberg. This was a battle between The Transvaal Commando together with the Free State against the Basotho’s. 5 of the burghers died. The monument was unveiled on 16 December 1895 at Ararat by Commandant HJ Bruwer. Re-erected in 1962 on the Market Square

Public Convenience Building

  • Public Convenience Building – This sandstone building is currently use for trade.

Methodist Church

  • Methodist Church – The cornerstone of this church was laid by Emma Walker on 3rd August 1936.
