BOKSBURG

Boksburg was established on 2 March 1887 on the farm Vogelfontein after gold was discovered. It was named after the State Secretary of the South African RepublicWillem Eduard Bok. It became a municipality in October 1905.

Remnants of Victorian house

  • Only the corner tower of this Victorian house remains. Situated on Mai Reef road

Angelo Hotel,

  • Angelo Hotel, Main Reef Road – 1887. This hotel was used as a staging post between Boksburg and the other towns.

Post Office

  • Post Office, corner of Market and Joubert streets. - This building was only completed in 1905. This building was declared a National Monument.

Old Government Building

  • Old Government Building, Church Street - The building was designed by Sytze Wierda, architect of the ZAR. The cornerstone was laid by the Head of Mining CJ Joubert on 15 October 1890. It served as a Magistrate’s Office from 1901 – 1958. This building was declared a National Monument.

Methodist Church

  • Methodist Church, cnr Osborne Street and Market st – Circa 1906. No cornerstone could be found. A list of all clergymen within the church exist since 1906.

St Michael and All Angels Church

  • St Michael and All Angels Church – This church was designed by Sir Herbert Baker in the Romanesque style. The building was consecrated in 1912.

Masonic Lodge

  • Masonic Lodge, Osborne Street. -  A few Freemasons gathered in Boksburg in November 1892 and having decided to form a lodge. No time was wasted in finding a 'permanent' home, which was built and ready for occupation by 1895.

Masonic Hotel

  • Masonic Hotel, Market Street – Established 1887 and rebuilt in 1906. The hotel was opened by a Mr F Johnson, one of the first hotels in Boksburg.

Assembly Hall (Harvey’s Building

  • Assembly Hall (Harvey’s Building, cr Commissioner and Loop St) – 1890 – was used as an Opera house. Currently used as Boksburg Printers

St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls

  • St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls – Kruger St – The school was established in 1923. The cornerstone for the building was laid by Bishop Cox, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Johannesburg on 14 September 1921. The school is famous for its drum majorettes.

Boksburg first school

  • Boksburg first school – ERPM Golf Course, Pretoria Rd Boksburg West – The golf course came into being in 1903 when holes were built around the first school. This wood-and-iron structure was also used as the first club house.  

St John's Uniting Presbyterian Church

  • St John's Uniting Presbyterian Church - Leeuwpoort St – Three cornerstones were laid on 25 November 1916 by the following - WM Dalrymple, Dr JD Kerr Muir and B Owen Jones Esq 

First World War Monument

  • First World War Monument – Town Hall grounds cnr Commissioner and Bank St – This monument commemorates those of Boksburg who gave their lives during the War. Erected in 1921

ERPM War Memorial

  • ERPM War Memorial – Pretoria Rd between Rondebult and Main reef Rd, Angelo – on private property – This memorial commemorates those who fall during the Great War - 1914-1918. It included Col Sir George Farrar – the main shareholder of the ERPM mines.
