ELSBURG

Town 6 km south-east of Germiston in Gauteng

Laid out on the farm Klippoortjie in 1887 and proclaimed a town in 1908.

It was named after the owner,

Commandant Johannes Marthinus Els. Els returned from the war and

divided his farm among his remaining troops who had lost everything.

Elsburg farmhouse complex

  • Farmhouse complex at the end of Kruger Street. Circa 1895.  It comprises of the main house and various outbuildings. The house was originally owned by maize farmer Ignatius William Charles van Wyk. The house was owned by various people including JS Marwick, a member in Jan Smuts ‘s South African Party. It was then occupied by Mr Greyvenstein, the grandfather of the man who founded Simba Chips.
