CHARLESTOWN 

Charlestown was established in 1889 and proclaimed a town in 1906. It was named after Sir Charles Mitchell, Governor of Natal. This was the train terminus on the Natal side. The railway line from Durban to Transvaal reached the border in April 1891.

Old Dwellings

  • Old dwellings - Beautiful houses in its heydays. These houses are still occupied but in need of repairs.

Amajuba Mountain

  • Amajuba Mountain – During the 1st Anglo Boer War (First war of Independence) General Colley of the British occupy Amajuba in February 1881 with a part of his force. General Joubert of the Boers send volunteers up the mountain. After a fierce attack the engagement was over. General Colley and some of his men were killed. The Battle of Amajuba resulted in an armistice and led to the peace negotiations at O’Neil’s cottage.
