DISTRICT SIX (ZONNEBLOEM)

The name given in 1867, is derived from its being the sixth of six wards or districts established. These were replaced in 1909 by eight wards and District Six was included in Castle ward. The name continued to be used. Most of the area was demolished in 1960’s and the inhabitants were relocated. In 2003 a start was made to rebuild the area.

Zonnebloem – the name is Dutch for ‘sunflower’. District Six was developed on the farm Zonnebloem.
