Norvalspont
Settlement on the southern bank of the Orange River. Afrikaans for ‘Norval’s ferry’. It was named after an enterprising Scot who constructed a ferry here in 1848.
Concentration camp cemetery
Concentration camp cemetery – a memorial for the 412 men, women and children who died in the Norvalspont Concentration camp during the ABW 1899-1902 was erected here at the cemetery.
Gariep Dam
Gariep Dam - Biggest storage and irrigation dam in SA. Built on the Orange River. The name is derived from Khoikhoi ‘!garib’ or ‘gariep’, and means ‘river’. The dam was previously known as the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam, named in honour of Dr Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd 1901-1966) Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958-1966. It was commissioned in 1971. The name was officially changed to Gariep Dam on 4 October 1996.
